Koronadal launches implantable pet microchipping
The City of Koronadal recently launched the implantable pet microchipping technology during the dog show following the celebration of the 23rd Charter Anniversary and Negosyo Festival 2023 as part of dog registration and to gradually eradicate stray dogs while also easily identifying their owners.
According to one of the agrivet product and services’ Business Executive Manager for the Mindanao Branch Eric Mallo in the said project, the City of Koronadal was considered the first ever to implement Information Governance (IG) in the entire Mindanao while the fourth in the whole country. Taguig, he said, was the first city in the Philippines to implement such a program, followed by Makati and Quezon City.
Mallo, further elaborated that the aforementioned pet identification scheme provides a wide margin of safety for domesticated animals due to its non-migrating and biology compatibility which means it will not cause allergic reactions or inflammation once it is embedded in pets.
Furthermore, since the technology is non-navigating, he said that even if it reaches over 25 years, it will only remain in its location. He also commented that there are some countries which already achieved a status of zero rabies due to the application of microchipping. Mallo, on the other hand, expressed his appreciation to the City Government of Koronadal for the realization of such a platform. “Thank you city for becoming part of the project,” Mallo, as he welcomed the city of Koronadal.
Meanwhile, City Veterinarian Dr. Charlemagne S. Calo, explained that since the pet identification strategy is about to commence in the city, it is mandated for the dogs to be registered based on Republic Act No. 9482 known as the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007. “Mandatory po na lahat ng dog ay ma-registered base sa national law na Anti-Rabies Act 2007,” he said.
Apart from the above-mentioned program, Calo also emphasized that RA 9482, covers dog mass vaccination; establishment of a central database system for registered and vaccinated dogs; impounding, field control, and disposition of unregistered, stray, and unvaccinated dogs and conduct of information and education campaign (IEC) on the prevention and rabies control.
In addition, both City Mayor Eliordo U. Ogena and Vice Mayor Erlinda P. Araquil continue their advocacy on how to become responsible pet owners wherein must be treated like human beings. The mayor believed that dogs have a therapeutic effect when the sense of exhaustion endures. He also reminded everyone not to eat dog meat because, in addition to being ruthless, we are bound by the law. Vice Mayor Araquil, who is a fur parent, stated that her pet serves as a stress reliever.
Finally, following the launching of implantable pet microchipping, Dr. Calo, the city veterinarian confirms that there will be one (1) barangay in the city that will serve as a pilot area for the said purpose and the beneficiary will be Purok Villegas and Santos of Barangay Zone III.
