Flood control projects on top of the government’s priorities

January 28, 2025

As part of Koronadal City Mayor Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena’s 10-point development agenda, the City Government of Koronadal gives priority to infrastructure projects as manifestation of the city’s growth and stability. These projects are not only intended to showcase the city’s exponential economic growth but also to safeguard its people in times of the occurrence of natural calamities.

To address concerns about the recent heavy rains that resulted to flooding in some areas in the city, Mayor Ogena ensures the public that the city government is fast tracking the completion of infrastructure projects to mitigate floods in times of heavy rainfall. City Engineer Ruel C. Tianchon in his report cited multiple flood control projects including the construction of line canals, box culverts and among others.

In the year 2023 alone, the city government through the City Engineering Office (CEO) has allocated a total of 44 million pesos to fund various flood control projects and 52 million pesos for the rehabilitation of bridges mostly in the city proper. In 2024, LGU Koronadal has allocated a total of 71 million pesos that funded the construction of 29 flood control projects to which 17 of those projects are already completed, nine are still ongoing and three are scheduled for bidding. In addition, the city has also allocated 14.4 million pesos for bridge rehabilitation in the year 2024. The City Government is also constantly coordinating with the line agencies such as the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in crafting measures in order to align the city’s infrastructure priorities without compromising the welfare of the farmers in our neighboring municipalities.

“Ang LGU Koronadal headed by Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena, naga appropriate gid kita every year sang para sa flood control…,” said Engr. Tianchon.

Furthermore, despite the LGU’s valiant efforts to allocate funds to fuel the construction of these projects, Mayor Ogena appeals to public for cooperation in mitigating the adverse effects of heavy rainfall by abiding to the provisions of the solid waste management ordinance.
