Koronadal Unveils Stunning Recycled Art Installations

As part of the city government of Koronadal’s commitment and dedication to continuously help safeguard the environment through innovation and creativity, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) has recently unveiled two breathtaking art installations, the “Bangkang Dahon” sculpture and the Blok Creek Glass Scape.
These masterpieces, which were skillfully crafted by Kudlit-South Cotabato artists led by Ronito “Dodz McBaldz” Subaldo, were made from recyclable materials such as shredded glass and plastic from the city’s sanitary landfill – a powerful symbol of transformation and renewal.
The “Bangkang Dahon”, made from approximately 2,500 kilos of crushed glass bottles, is a symbolism of freshness and new beginnings. Its shape resembles a “bangka” or a boat carrying the Koronadaleños. The eastward direction of the dove, which signifies peace, guides Koronadal as it journeys towards a greener, more sustainable and resilient city. It stands as a beacon of hope inspired by the successful rehabilitation of Blok Creek.
Meanwhile, plastic picket fences, which are constructed from 200 kilos of shredded recycled plastic materials, were also positioned adjacent to the sculpture.
The Blok Creek Glass Scape, created from 1,800 kilos of shredded recycled glass bottles, is equally captivating and vibrant landscape artwork. The perfectly circular trees represent unity, endless possibilities, and harmonious balance. Their sturdy branches mark the continuous renewal and vigorous growth of the community.
The pristine blue sky epitomizes Koronadaleños dedication to preserving air quality, ensuring a pollution-free environment for generations to come.
The fields of golden earth and vibrant yellow-greens, adorned with white stripes, paint the city’s rich agricultural heritage, sustained by clear blue waters that provide a livelihood for the hardworking farmers. This beautiful masterpiece encapsulates the essence of Koronadal – a city thriving on environmental stewardship, communal harmony, agricultural prosperity, and sustainable development.
City Mayor Eliordo U. Ogena expressed immense pride in these iconic landmarks, highlighting the unique artistry and the innovative use of recycled materials, which can only be found in the city.
“Where can you find a work of art like this, except in only one city, the City of Koronadal, the heartland of SOCCSKSARGEN Region, the center of gravity of SOCCSKSARGEN, the component capital of a first-class province, which happens to be a first-class component city now…..May these inspire all of us to work harder, motivate us, knowing that we are luckily residing in a place where, probably, human civilization in this city started. […..] This will be an iconic landmark in the city, as iconic as that roundball of its unique materials that [were] used”, Mayor Ogena said.
City ENRO Augustus L. Bretaña vowed to create more glass scape wall design projects along Blok Creek in the future, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to reducing waste and transforming discarded materials into stunning works of art and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
Lead artist Subaldo expressed deep gratitude to City Mayor Ogena for his unwavering belief in and support of local artists, entrusting him with this significant project.
