How to prevent fires: Don’t use Facebook Live right away, says Fire Marshall Gazo

March 29, 2021

Celebrating Fire Prevention Month this March, BFP Koronadal has some reminders in dealing with fire emergencies during the age of social media.

“Pag may sunog, indi diretso mag Facebook Live,” reminds Koronadal BFP City Fire Marshall SINSP Jonathan Gazo, emphasizing that the safety of life is the number one priority before pulling out phones and broadcasting it live in case of a fire emergency,

In an interview from Talakayan Talk Show aired on March 13, SINSP Gazo noted that electric short circuits, abandoned electrical appliances and the overloading of extension wires are the common causes of fire hazards in the city.

Last 2020, 37 fire incidents were reported by BFP with more than 5 million worth of property damages, while 5 fire incidents were listed this year from January to March with 500,000 worth of estimated damages.

When it comes to response preparedness, SINSP Gazo says five firetrucks and two ambulances are on standby in case of emergency. The city is also fortunate to partner with volunteer fire brigades from private sectors, such as KCC Fire Brigade and South Cotabato Chamber of Commerce fire volunteers.

The Koronadal City Fire Station also conducts routine information dissemination efforts regarding fire safety through Oplan Ligtas Pamayanan (OLP). Aside from OLP barangay caravans, SINSP Gazo notes that they are the only fire station conducting Zoom webinars through OLP Online in South Cotabato.

Before the interview ends, the also city fire marshall shared tips on what to do in the event that a fire alarm happens in your home.

Public reminders: If you spot a fire emergency, put off flames as quickly as possible especially on small fires. However, if the fire spreads quickly and becomes difficult to manage, try to get out as quickly as possible, and have someone call the BFP Hotlines 911/160 or to cellphone numbers 09193635141/09097770744 to get help.
