The city gov’t and Pumaren bags awards at Gawad Kalasag

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) recognized the City Government of Koronadal and Mr. Shaun Pumaren as recipients of the Gawad Kalasag Seal and Special Awards for Excellence during the 22nd Gawad Kalasag National Awarding Ceremony, held at the Greenleaf Hotel Pavilion in General Santos City on December 2, 2022.

The city was awarded the Gawad Kalasag Seal of Excellence in the category of Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils and Offices (LDRRMCOs) for garnering a rating of “Beyond Compliant” with a score of 2.70.

The award was given after it outperformed the criteria for the establishment and operation of LDRMMCOs outlined in the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) Act, Republic Act 10121.

Koronadal is one of the cities in the country that received a beyond compliant rating for the Gawad Kalasag Seal for LDRRMOs this year, along with Norala and Tupi municipalities.

Apart from the city, the San Lorenzo Ruiz Child Development Center of Barangay Zone I and its Child Development Worker, Shaun L. Pumaren, received the same national award twice and are also the top one (1) in the same category.

Mr. Shaun Pumaren received Special Recognition in the Individual Category, the Gawad KALASAG Seal, and Special Awards for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, as well as Humanitarian Assistance.

Involving all the parents of San Lorenzo Ruiz Child Development Center , Pumaren spearheaded the San Lorenzo Ruiz Child Development Center’s First Quick Response Team (QRT), in which he teaches Basic First Aid Life Support and Best Disaster Preparedness on Demonstration.

Since 2015, Mr. Pumaren has advocated for DRRM awareness. As a volunteer Day Care Teacher, he ensures that his advocacy is not limited to young students but is also packaged to reach out to parents and the community.“I started teaching kids at an early age 3-4 years old, about the basic earth quake drill and fire drill, I also teach basic first aid to the parents with orientation, seminars and doing

trainings about disaster prevention awareness”, Mr. Pumaren talking about his initiatives in emergency situations.

According to Pumaren, there are 19 QRT parents, each of whom is in charge of a different obligation and committee.

Pumaren also shares, the struggles that he faced in preparation, stating that he needed more time to ensure that the parents and children understood the practices, whether at school or at home. Infact, he is a proud member of Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (BDRRMC) of Barangay Zone I and is currently the Team Leader of Search and Rescue Team and their Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC).

“Let’s just share what we can share to help. The limitation of resources is not an obstacle”, he added.
