Public Service Awards Night honors decades of commendable leadership
In recognition of the enduring public service and commitment of the former barangay officials, the city government initiated the Distinguished Public Service Awarding Ceremony last January 23, 2024 at Cinco Niñas, Barangay Morales.
17 Barangay Captains and 94 Barangay Councilors received a plaque of recognition that has rendered three consecutive terms in public service, spanning from 1994 to 2018. They also received incentives – Php50,000 for Barangay Kagawads and Php100,000 for Barangay Captains.
The ceremony commenced with an opening message given by the Liga ng mga Barangay President Marvin Ian Gumbao who emphasized that, “Kamo ang mga unsung heroes [You are the unsung heroes].. You are responsible in making Koronadal a progressive city.” This underscored the integral role played by these former officials in the broader context of the city’s progress. He further stipulated that the event is just like a reunion, a gathering to celebrate the accomplishments rendered by the former officials.
Moreover, City Vice Mayor Erlinda P. Araquil, MDMG, DPA, also expressed gratitude to the awardees for their contribution that made this then-municipality a city. She said, “all of you ay mayroon pong ambag kung saan na ang City Government of Koronadal. Ang dati pong munisipyo, ngayon po’y isa nang lungsod [all of you have contributions to where the City Government of Koronadal is today. What used to be a municipality, is now a city]. City Mayor Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena, despite his absence physically to the said event due to prior engagements, also expressed his thanks to the former officials via a video message. He encouraged them to continue to be an example to others as public servants.

Included in the awarding ceremony is the Posthumous Honors as an acknowledgement to the former barangay officials who, despite their passing, had left an indelible mark in their respective barangays. The award was received by the family members.
One of the highlights of the evening is the Special Public Servant Recognition given to Mrs. Porferia C. Gumbao who rendered 41 years of public service (1982-2023) – longest years served among all other awardees. She was the former Punong Barangay of Barangay San Roque for 23 years and also became a Sangguniang Barangay Member for 18 years.
City Councilor and the Committee Chairperson on Human Rights, Justice and Legal Matters John Rey “Chow” Rodriguez also thanked the rest of the committee members from the Sangguniang Panlungsod who worked tirelessly to better the programs and serve the people.
The Distinguished Public Service Awarding Ceremony ended with a sense of continuity – it served as a challenge to the incumbent barangay officials to do their part not solely to receive a plaque and incentive but because the constituents need them.
