BIOs demonstrates readiness for radio broadcasting

December 8, 2022

The Barangay Information Officers (BIOs) from the 27 barangays demonstrated readiness to do radio broadcasting work as field reporter during the Anti-Illegal Drugs Forum, Basic News Writing and Broadcasting Seminar-Workshop on December 2, 2022 at RMM Zipline & Eco-Tourism Resort, Barangay Mambucal.

The training provided the BIOs with the opportunity to become acquainted with the aforesaid platform and learn the fundamentals of writing for broadcasting. Giving them the opportunity to participate in a radio broadcasting workshop as part of their training also prepares them for future broadcasting opportunities. It’s also a way to build a community of people who recognize, support, and advance the fight against illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, in his talk, resource speaker and City Information Officer Romar A. Olivares simplified his approximately 20 years of broadcasting experience so that participants could grasp and understand the fundamentals of radio broadcasting. He also showed the participants a video presentation of the CIOs reporting to 107.3 Radyo Latigo to demonstrate radio anchoring and news reporting. His talk and inputs focused on the basic concept of the said platform, providing participants with an understanding of the various types of radio broadcasting and how to begin using the said platform with newly acquired skills.

In retrospect, the BIO’s mandate includes gathering and disseminating news and information to their constituents, as well as to the CIO for broadcasting to the general public, in order to establish institutional links between the government and the people at the grassroots level in their community. The workshop prepared the BIOs for the CIO’s future plans to have the BIOs participate in radio broadcast reporting to inform the public about significant events and happenings in their respective barangays.

During the practicum, some of the BIOs demonstrated competence and readiness to do radio reporting. The forum that serves as their data source was written for the purpose of radio broadcasting, and some were able to actualize reporting to put what they learned during the lecture to use. Olivares, also said that their acquired skills have met the standard and that they are prepared to do the job of a field reporter using script as a guide.

City Mayor Eliordo U. Ogena also paid a visit and emphasized the importance of human development and empowerment, stating that it is critical to empower barangay officials in order to prepare them to perform their duties. He also expressed strong support for the CADAC’s anti-drug efforts. He also addressed the issue of garbage in Koronadal and urged barangay officials to collaborate with the government to make Koronadal garbage-free.

Meanwhile, in addition to teaching BIOs writing and broadcasting skills, the workshop will provide an overview of the government’s ongoing anti-illegal drug initiatives and how they can get involved by utilizing their knowledge, networks, and various communication channels.

During the forum, members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) and their representatives reported on their respective accomplishments, including ongoing programs, projects, and activities aimed at combating the adverse effects of drugs, such as community-based rehabilitation and aftercare. Some allied agencies, such as the representative of the Department of Education City Schools Division, Mr. Dave Capitan, RN, also shared the enthusiastic implementation of their various programs and initiatives, which are ultimately focused on the preventive aspect.

Meanwhile, Capitan emphasized the strict implementation of the Comprehensive Tobacco Control Policy, which he believes is the typical beginning of vices that leads to drug addiction later on. Furthermore, the National Drug Education Program (NDEP) in schools was strengthened in order to provide a comprehensive approach to the problem of drug abuse. It was created to enable all sectors to collaborate, with the school system serving as the central hub, thereby uniting all sectoral endeavors.

Rev. Chaplain Jose Custorio, NACPHIL City Director, on the other hand, discussed how the government and the religious sector work together to combat the negative effects of drugs. According to Chaplain Custorio, one of the most important components of the CADAC’s holistic intervention is to provide hope to recovering addicts through spiritual counseling. CADAC Action Officer Lt. Col. Clemente Castillo (Ret.) on the other hand, made a statement about how the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council is leveraging their efforts.

As the primary partner in disseminating developmental news and information, BIOs must fully understand their role in the dissemination of reliable news and information. The CIO hopes that the continuous training and exposure of the BIOs to the various communication platforms will result in empowered partners in the barangay who will promote transparency through the adequate and timely delivery of Barangay Balita.
